Phil is a Managing Director at Modern. He leverages his experience as an executive coach, leadership development designer / deliverer, researcher, and professor to maintain and improve knowledge of the best in leadership development. Phil has deep knowledge in both the academic and experiential foundations of leadership assessment, including years of designing, collecting, and analyzing longitudinal data.
Phil’s passion is coaching. He loves helping people become better leaders and not only increase their satisfaction in their leadership but also their satisfaction in their lives. He has attended and led over 200 coaching and leadership workshops and retreats over the past 10 years. He has a wealth of hands-on experience that includes over 300 hours of coaching supervision experience with elite coaches and over 800 hours of coaching high functioning executives, and 6 years of in-depth research on transformational leadership and coaching.
Prior to joining Modern, Phil was Director of Operations for a leadership development firm in Chicago while also co-founding a leadership development consulting firm in China, where he led trainings and coached executives. Fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) and Spanish, Phil has helped transform the leadership styles of Spanish- and Chinese-speaking executives in the States and abroad.
Phil has a Ph.D. in Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience) from Peking University in Beijing, China, an M.A. in Transformational Leadership and Coaching, and a B.A. in Psychology from Carleton College. As Professor of Applied Neuroscience, Phil taught M.B.A. and M.A. students leadership and coaching. Phil is also an ICF PCC certified coach.
